Celebrating Records and Information Management Month

April is National Records and Information Management Month (RIMM)! And, as a professional records center, this happens to be our favorite celebration of the year!  This month-long observance is dedicated to raising awareness and recognizing the invaluable contributions of RIM professionals in the everchanging landscape of data management and how companies manage and access their important information.

As records and information management professionals, we have been at the forefront of technological advances, witnessing firsthand how the industry has evolved and adapted to new challenges. From the days of paper-based systems to the rise of digital transformation, we have played a critical role in helping businesses navigate and harness the power of information. While we embrace the future of information management with excitement—exploring innovations like artificial intelligence, cloud storage, and automation—we also honor the progress that has brought us here. Our commitment to organizing, protecting, and optimizing information has empowered businesses to operate more efficiently, stay compliant, and make informed decisions.

To celebrate this special month, the document management experts at Record Storage Systems are sharing personal stories and memories from working in the records center and sharing predictions on the future of information management.

What does Records and Information Management mean to you and your career?

I have seen the remarkable rise in automation grow significantly since my early days of just handling paper. I’ve learned a lot about the use and integration of mobile devices and how it has improved the chain of custody and security of the vital records we handle every day.”
 – Lisa Miller, Office Manager

As someone who has closely followed the evolution of document management, I’m surprised at how long the transition to fully digital records has taken. It’s equally surprising to see just how many paper documents businesses still rely on in their daily operations.”
 – Ken Vaughan, Senior Account Executive

RIM is the backbone of information governance, ensuring that valuable data is managed responsibly and used to drive success. It has been great way to see how RIM minimizes risks, improves productivity, and supports transparency. Whether in business, healthcare, government, or any industry, effective RIM helps maintain accurate records, streamlines workflows, and protects sensitive information.”
 – Anthony Battista, IT and Production Manager

Coming from a warehousing background, the RIM industry has afforded lots of challenges and opportunities in the three decades I have been involved in it. From the growth and decline of both paper and data storage to the emergence of scanning and electronic documents, all have shaped the way we service our customers.”
 – Jim McNeely, Operations Manager

What is your favorite memory working at Record Storage Systems?

There are too many to name, but some of my favorite memories are from doing on-site purges, where we’d bring in a crew to sort, pack up, and transfer records to our facility for storage. I met a lot of people and saw a lot of things along the way. I really enjoyed the challenge and the hands-on work—it was a nice change of pace that took me out of my routine for a few weeks.”

 – Lisa Miller, Office Manager

In general, I appreciate the capability and the resources Record Storage Systems provides that offer flexible solutions to a customer’s needs as opposed to a “fitted” solution that does not solve a problem or improve business efficiencies. As an example,  because RSS offers different services, a prospect conversation initially relating to digitization of documents turns into a storage customer.”

Ken Vaughan, Senior Account Executive

“Seeing how impactful the work that we do helps other people be successful has been very rewarding. Working at RSS has been a great experience that has grown my knowledge in other areas that I wouldn’t have thought about.”

– Anthony Battista, IT and Production Manager

Some of my favorite memories are from helping medical clients with large purge projects back when paper records were still the norm. Those projects were always challenging and time-sensitive, but also incredibly rewarding.”
 – Jim McNeely, Operations Manager

What’s your prediction for the future of Records and Information Management?

I don’t think we’ll ever completely move away from paper, but more businesses will continue to expand their digital capabilities, and the reliance on paper records will decrease significantly.”

– Lisa Miller, Office Manager

Electronic document management software companies heavily promote mobile and AI solutions as key features, but so far, the impact has been minimal. I don’t think we’ll ever completely move away from paper, but more businesses will continue to expand their digital capabilities, leading to a significant decline in the use of paper records.”
 – Ken Vaughan, Senior Account Executive

My prediction for the future of RIM will be shaped by advancements in technology, evolving regulations, and the increasing need for data security and accessibility. AI will play a major role in automating records classification, retrieval, and compliance monitoring. Also cloud based solutions with give businesses more flexibility, scalability, and remote access to their important information.”
 – Anthony Battista, IT and Production Manager

“I believe electronic documents will be the driving force of the future, and I’d like to help our customers transition while still offering paper storage for those whose business needs make it the best solution.”

– Jim McNeely, Operations Manager
